Since 2010 BLC has supported the families and community of Windom Community School. We understand the needs of working families, and strive to create an environment where your children are able to strive and become leaders. Our bicultural staff brings many perspectives and experiences to our program, empowering students to become socially responsible and caring to the world around them. It’s not all work, no fun, we also love to celebrate birthdays, holidays and festivities.
One of the things that makes our program special is our bilingual approach to before and after school care. While English is the primary language at Windom, Spanish is woven into our daily routines—through greetings, common questions, directions, and conversations. Our native Spanish-speaking staff lead activities and communicate with students in Spanish, using repetition, key phrases, visuals, and body language to support understanding.
This immersive environment helps children naturally pick up new words and phrases, strengthening their ability to communicate and connect in two languages. With lots of encouragement and support, students begin to see bilingualism not just as a skill—but as a superpower!
Academic support is a key focus in our program. Homework time is prioritized, giving students a dedicated space to complete assignments when needed. Bilingual storytelling and reading are woven into our daily routine, fostering a love for reading and stories in both languages! Our goal is to make learning engaging, by using creative writing prompts, listening to our favorite songs, and exploring topics that excite our group. Our approach is flexible, adapting to the interests and needs of our individual kiddos.
In addition to academics, we emphasize leadership and values, helping students understand the importance of qualities like responsibility, compassion and respect. We encourage children to discover the power of these values while building confidence and leadership skills. We also invite you to share how we can best support your child's individual academic needs!
Keeping students engaged, active and having fun is a key part of our daily routine. We build community and strong friendships through movement in games, teambuilding, and sports matches. As well as using the school’s gym and playground to mix up the physical activity options!
Yoga and calming activities is part of our weekly routine, this activity often starts elevated and energized and ends with calming breathing exercises, helping them relax and find inner calm. We prioritize this balanced approach to better support our student’s emotional well being and development. These techniques and activities are for the students to use when needing to calm down in the future.
Art is another key part of our program that we use to promote creativity, confidence and self expression. We love drawing inspiration from artists and introducing the work and stories to the kids through books, clay, painting and more. Music, dance and cooking is part of the art we bring to the program as well!
Our pogram is broken down into four sessions based on the seasons: Fall, Spring, Summer and Winter. Register before the deadline stated on our news and flyers. Ask about registering in the middle of a session, if there is room available we can make arrangements!
On top of the before and after school, we also offer classes Monday through Friday for an hour. Classes are available to be registered separately from our other programs!
Our goal is to create a safe space where the children can explore and discover their talents and interests, grow confidence, and learn values and skills.
In our cooking classes we learn an important skill, and appreciate the art of food from many different cultures, taekwondo teaches the value of patience, responsibility and discipline, and our art class explores creativity through various mediums and learning how to reuse and repurpose materials to create something beautiful. The different options of classes change throughout the year, learn about upcoming classes below.
7:30 - 9:30 AM Monday - Friday
Our morning program begins at 7:30 AM and welcomes BLC kids until 9:30 AM. Each week, we explore new themes based on important values, interests, and topics that inspire the kids and allow our staff to share their unique talents.
When kids arrive, they’ll find engaging activities ready to go! We’ve had themed weeks like Leadership Week and Cultural Week, where kids get creative, collaborate, and learn through hands-on activities. Our mornings include outdoor play, music, reading, dancing, and sometimes even sampling cultural foods! Some days we focus on writing, while other times we dive into free art, gym time, and much more.
It’s a fun, energetic start to the day that’s designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and excitement for the school day
In our afternoon program, we start by picking up students from their classrooms and gathering in our circle, where we start off with a question, a fun game, or a cool off movement activity. After washing our hands and enjoying a snack, we break into two groups: one for enrichment classes and the other for after-school activities.
Each week, we explore new themes and topics that excite both our staff and the kids, incorporating storytelling, games, and creative projects that also teach important lessons. Throughout the day, we seamlessly integrate Spanish vocabulary and sentences, helping the kids absorb the language in a fun way, without even realizing it!
