Camp runs from June through the end of August. Families can register on a weekly basis, selecting the certain weeks they need for summer camp. We make learning fun by creating weekly themes that are related to our Friday fieldtrip. We’ve explored the importance of water, the magic of performing arts, and enjoyed the beauty of MN flora and fauna. Every year is a bit different, as we have many returning campers.
Our team instructs, communicates and responds in Spanish to our students. We use non verbal communication, music, books, images and support from our spanish speakers to get everyone comfortable with new words and phrases. Spanish music and storytelling and games are part of our daily routine so words stick. We focus on vocabulary that is in line with our weekly themes, while also encouraging an immersion environment that allows the children to naturally pick up Spanish from listening and watching.
Bilingual storytelling, and reading is part of our daily routine, promoting literacy and listening skills. STEM, carpentry, art and cultural activities are part of all our weeks! Using the knowledge from different experiences our team has, we plan activities in line with our weekly themes that promote curiosity for exploration and learning!
Additionally cultural exploration is a key part of our program. Our team always hold unique experiences they bring to the table that open the worldview for our students. We explore games from around the world, characters and art forms from Mexico, Venezuela, and indigenous peoples, celebrate and learn about Latin American festivities and best of all eat foods and explore tastes from different cultures.
Keeping students engaged, active and having fun is a key part of our daily routine. We build community and strong friendships through movement in games, teambuilding, and sports matches. As well as using the school’s gym and playground to mix up the physical activity options!
Yoga and calming activities is part of our weekly routine, this activity often starts elevated and energized and ends with calming breathing exercises, helping them relax and find inner calm. We prioritize this balanced approach to better support our student’s emotional well being and development. These techniques and activities are for the students to use when needing to calm down in the future.
Art is another key part of our program that we use to promote creativity, confidence and self expression. We love drawing inspiration from artists and introducing the work and stories to the kids through books, clay, painting and more. Music, dance and cooking is part of the art we bring to the program as well!
During June and July, BLC offers several weeks of all-day camps at Nokomis Heights on Mondays through Fridays. Camp activities include art and crafts, physical activities, reading time, Lego building, outdoor activities and more. Each Friday the students go on a field trip: past field trips have included water park visits, Como Zoo, and nature programs. Students can register for as many weeks as they are interested in.
